The first Session
What to expect
Our initial meeting is a thorough and focused assessment. I want to get to know you—how you think, your personal and family history, and your relationships with the important people in your life. Research shows that a better outcome is achieved when there is a "click" between therapist and client, so this session is as much about our connection as it is about information gathering.
During & In-between sessions
During Therapy
Duration: Typically CBT is a short term approach. It can be 12 to 18 sessions, though more time may be required for more complex work
Frequency: Sessions last 50 minutes and are usually held weekly, however sessions can also be spaced out.
Collaboration: We work at the level you are comfortable with to address your presenting issues.
In-between Therapy
CBT is an active therapy. To get the most out of our time, I often suggest tasks to complete between sessions, such as:
Reading about specific conditions.
Journaling and thought records.
Behavioural Experiments: Testing out your beliefs in real-world situations to challenge unhelpful patterns.
